										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The reason nerites are recommended so consistently is one biological fact, and it is worth stating before anything else because it is the whole appeal.</p>
<p><strong>Nerite larvae need brackish or salt water to develop. In a freshwater tank the eggs are laid and they do not hatch.</strong> So you get an animal that eats algae steadily for a long time and never produces the population explosion that makes people regret adding snails.</p>
<p>That single property is why they are on this list and pest snails are on a different page. It also comes with the one genuine annoyance, which nobody warns beginners about, and which is the second half of this article.</p>
<h2>What they actually eat, and what they do not</h2>
<p>Nerites are grazers. They work over hard surfaces continuously, and they are genuinely effective on the kinds of algae that are attached to glass, rock and equipment.</p>
<p><strong>They are good at:</strong> the green film on the glass, soft green algae on hardscape, brown diatom film, and the general biofilm that accumulates on everything in a running tank. <p><strong>They are indifferent to:</strong> hair algae and most stringy growth, which they will graze around rather than through.</p>
<p><strong>They will not touch:</strong> black beard algae, in general. This is the most common disappointment, because black beard is the algae people most want removed and the one no common grazer reliably eats. <a href="/black-beard-algae-aquarium/">Black beard algae</a> covers what actually slows it, and the answer is not an animal.</p>

<p>And to be plain about the largest misconception: <strong>a nerite will not clear green water.</strong> A bloom suspended in the water column is not on a surface, so there is nothing for a grazer to graze. <a href="/green-water-aquarium/">Green water</a> is a different problem with a different answer.</p>

<h2>The point everyone gets backwards</h2>
<p>An algae eater is not a substitute for the conditions that produce less algae.</p>
<p>Algae grows where there is light and there are nutrients, and the amount of both is set by your lighting hours, your feeding, your plant load and your water change routine. A snail eats some of what grows. It does not change how much grows.</p>
<p>The practical consequence: a tank with a genuine algae problem and three nerites in it is a tank with an algae problem and three well-fed snails. <strong>Fix the inputs, then add grazers to keep the surfaces tidy.</strong> That order works; the other order does not.</p>
<p>The corollary matters for the snail: a spotlessly clean tank has nothing in it for a grazer to eat, and a nerite in a tank with no algae will slowly starve unless you feed it. Blanched vegetables and sinking foods work for this. If you have added snails to solve a problem and then solved the problem, you now have animals to feed.</p>

<h2>The eggs, which is the thing nobody mentions</h2>
<p>Here is the trade for the no-population-explosion benefit.</p>
<p>Female nerites lay eggs anyway. The eggs are small, hard, white, and stuck firmly to hardscape, glass, equipment and plant leaves. They look like grains of sand or tiny sesame seeds glued in place.</p>
<p><strong>They will not hatch in fresh water, and they do not come off easily.</strong> They resist scrubbing, they are visible on dark surfaces, and on driftwood they can be genuinely difficult to remove. A blade on glass takes them off. On wood and rock, most people give up and live with them.</p>
<p>This is worth knowing before you buy rather than after. It is the standard complaint about an otherwise excellent animal, and there is no fix beyond keeping fewer, or keeping only males, which you cannot reliably identify at purchase.</p>

<h2>They climb out, and here is why</h2>
<p>Nerites leave the water. This is normal behavior, not necessarily distress, and in the wild they live in a zone that is periodically above the water line.</p>
<p>That said, a snail that has left the water and is heading determinedly upward is often telling you something. The things worth checking:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>The water.</strong> Test it. A snail leaving a tank is one of the classic early signs that something is wrong with the water before the fish show anything. <a href="/aquarium-water-parameters/">Aquarium water parameters</a> covers what to read.</li>
<li><strong>The food supply.</strong> A tank with nothing left to graze is a tank a grazer will try to leave.</li>
<li><strong>The water level.</strong> Space between the surface and the rim gives them somewhere to go that is not the floor.</li>

<p>The practical response is a lid, or at minimum something covering the gaps around the filter and the cables. A snail found dry on the carpet may be recoverable if it was recent; one that has been there overnight generally is not. Do not put a dead snail back in the tank, because a decomposing snail in a small tank is a genuine ammonia event.</p>
<h2>Their shells, which are not decoration</h2>
<p>A snail&#39;s shell is made from what it takes out of the water, and a shell that is pitting, eroding at the tip, or going thin and translucent at the edge is telling you about your water rather than about the snail.</p>
<p>The general direction: shells suffer in soft, acidic water and hold up better in harder water with more mineral content. <p>What is reliable rather than numerical: <strong>damage that is already there does not reverse.</strong> New growth at the shell opening can be healthy while the older whorls stay pitted, and that is a recovering snail, not a failed one.</p>

<h2>Adding them, and the one hard rule</h2>
<p>Acclimate them slowly, the same way you would shrimp. A chemistry change delivered in one step is the thing that kills them, not the destination.</p>
<p>And the rule that applies to every animal in this cluster: <strong>copper. Do not put copper into a tank with snails in it, in any amount, for any reason.</strong> It arrives in fish medications, snail treatments, some plant fertilizers and some foods, and it is lethal to invertebrates at exposures fish barely notice. Read the label of anything you add and look specifically for what it says about invertebrates. If it says nothing at all, assume the answer is bad.</p>

<p><strong>Adult shrimp are fine in almost any filter setup. Baby shrimp are not, and they are the ones that decide whether you have a colony or a slowly shrinking group of shrimp.</strong> A newly hatched neocaridina is smaller than most people picture, it goes where the current takes it, and an intake slot it fits through is a one-way trip.</p>
<p>So the question is not really &quot;which filter is shrimp-safe&quot;. It is &quot;what happens at the intake&quot;, and that has a five-dollar answer for the filter you already own.</p>
<h2>What actually goes wrong</h2>
<p>Three separate failure modes, and only one of them is about the filter type.</p>
<p><strong>The intake.</strong> Anything small enough to fit through the slots gets pulled in. Some survive inside the filter body and live there quite happily, which is why people find shrimp in their canister when they open it. Many do not, and an impeller is unforgiving.</p>
<p><strong>The flow.</strong> Shrimp are not strong swimmers and babies are essentially plankton. A tank with a strong current has areas a colony cannot use, and food that never settles anywhere they can graze it.</p>
<p><strong>The cleaning.</strong> This is the one nobody warns you about. Rinsing filter media under a tap kills the bacteria, and if the media is a sponge in a shrimp tank it is also the single richest grazing surface in the system. A filter clean done the wrong way can knock the colony twice: once on the water chemistry, once on the food supply.</p>

<h2>The fix that works on the filter you already have</h2>
<p>Before considering a purchase: <strong>cover the intake.</strong></p>
<p>A sponge pre-filter that slips over the intake tube of a hang-on-back or a canister solves the babies problem completely. It also becomes another surface for biofilm, which is food. It is the cheapest item in this article and it is the one that actually matters.</p>
<p>If you do not have one, a piece of filter foam and an elastic band does the same job, less tidily. So does fine mesh secured over the slots. The mechanism is the barrier, not the product.</p>
<p>This is worth being direct about, because a great deal of writing on this subject exists to sell a new filter: <strong>most readers of this page do not need to buy a filter. They need to put something over the intake of the one they own.</strong></p>

<h2>Sponge filters, and what they actually are</h2>
<p>Sponge filters come up constantly in shrimp keeping and it is worth understanding why rather than taking it on trust.</p>

<h2>Where it actually comes from</h2>
<p>Copper does not appear from nowhere. It arrives, and it arrives from a short list of places that share one property: none of them announces itself.</p>

<h2>The bit about fish medication, said plainly</h2>

<h2>Ruling out the ordinary causes first</h2>
<p>Before you conclude it was copper, make sure it was not the boring answer. A colony can also be lost to ammonia or nitrite, to a large sudden water change, to untreated tap water, or to a temperature swing, and all four are more common than people expect.</p>

<p>Because <strong>a cycled tank and a mature tank are two different things, and shrimp need the second one.</strong></p>
<p>Cycled means the tank can process waste without poisoning its occupants. That is a chemistry statement and a test kit can confirm it. Mature means the tank has developed the surfaces, the biofilm and the population of small organisms that a grazing animal lives on, and that it has been stable long enough to prove it will stay stable. No test kit reports on that.</p>
<p>Fish can be added to a cycled tank. Shrimp do much better in a mature one, and the gap between the two is measured in months rather than days.</p>
<h2>Why the extra wait actually helps</h2>
<p>Three separate things happen in the weeks after the cycle completes.</p>
<p><strong>Biofilm develops.</strong> Every surface in a running tank slowly acquires a thin layer of bacteria, algae and micro-organisms. It is invisible to you and it is the primary food source for a shrimp colony. <h2>How long, and why the recommendations disagree</h2>
<p>You will find advice ranging from &quot;as soon as it is cycled&quot; to &quot;not for six months&quot;, stated with equal confidence.</p>
<p>The disagreement is real and it is not stupidity on either side. The short recommendations come from keepers seeding a new tank from an established one, where the filter, the substrate and often the plants arrive already mature and the tank skips most of the waiting. <h2>Adding them: slower than you would add a fish</h2>
<p>Shrimp handle a chemistry change badly, so the acclimation is longer and gentler than for fish.</p>
<p>The principle is to change their water gradually rather than in one step. Float the bag to match temperature, then add small amounts of your tank water to their container over a long period, an hour or more, before netting them across. The exact schedule matters less than the gradient being shallow.</p>

<p><strong>Do not pour the shipping water into your tank.</strong> Net them across and discard it. Whatever was in that water stays out.</p>

<h2>What to do in the first fortnight</h2>
<p>Almost nothing, deliberately.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Do not feed for the first few days.</strong> A mature tank already has food in it and uneaten food is the thing most likely to cause a problem.</li>
<li><strong>Change water on your normal schedule</strong>, small and temperature-matched and conditioned.</li>
<li><strong>Do not add anything else</strong> to the tank. No fertilizer, no treatment, no new decor.</li>
<li><strong>Count them if you can.</strong> Shrimp hide constantly, so a low count is not necessarily a loss, but a trend downward over two weeks is real.</li>
<li><strong>Watch for molts.</strong> A discarded exoskeleton on the substrate looks alarmingly like a dead shrimp and is the opposite: it is a growing animal. Leave it in the tank.</li>

<h2>What they actually are</h2>
<p>Neocaridina shrimp, sold under a long list of color names, all of which are the same animal selectively bred for color. Red cherry, fire red, blue dream, yellow, orange, green: the care is identical, the colors interbreed, and mixed colors revert toward wild coloration over generations. If you want them to stay one color, keep one color.</p>
<p>They are small, they live in the range of a year or two, and they breed readily enough that a healthy colony replaces itself without any intervention from you. <h2>What kills a colony</h2>
<p>Colonies rarely decline slowly. They usually crash, and the causes are a short list.</p>
<p><strong>Copper.</strong> This is the big one and it deserves its own treatment. Copper is lethal to shrimp at levels that are unremarkable for fish, and it arrives in ways that are almost invisible: in fish medications, in some plant fertilizers, in snail treatments, in some foods, and in old plumbing. A colony that dies within a day of something being added to the water is a copper story more often than any other single cause.</p>
<p><strong>Ammonia or nitrite.</strong> Shrimp are less tolerant than most fish and they show it later, which is a bad combination. <h2>Feeding, which is mostly not feeding</h2>
<p>In a mature tank shrimp graze continuously on biofilm, soft algae and decomposing plant matter. That is their actual diet and it is already there.</p>

<h2>Water changes for a shrimp tank</h2>
<p>The general principle is different from a fish tank in one respect: smaller and more often, rather than larger and less often.</p>

<p>If you have a tank that has been running for months, is stable, is not overstocked, and has never had a fish medication in it, add shrimp and enjoy them.</p>
<p>If your tank finished cycling last month, wait. If you keep fish that will eat them, accept that you are keeping a snack rather than a colony. If you have recently medicated the tank for anything, be aware that some treatments persist and that a water change does not necessarily clear them.</p>

<h2>Minute ten to twenty: look at the fish that are still alive</h2>
<p>The survivors are better evidence than the body, because you can watch them.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Where are they in the tank?</strong> All crowded at the surface is a specific and urgent signal, covered in <a href="/why-is-my-fish-gasping-at-the-surface/">why fish gasp at the surface</a>.</li>
<li><strong>Are they breathing fast?</strong> Count gill movements against a normal day if you have any sense of one.</li>
<li><strong>Are fins clamped?</strong> A fish holding its fins tight to its body is a fish under pressure.</li>
<li><strong>Is anyone hiding who does not normally hide?</strong></li>
<li><strong>Is anyone else showing marks, spots, ragged fins, cloudiness or swelling?</strong></li>
<li><strong>Are they eating?</strong> Do not feed as a test right now, but note whether they had eaten normally yesterday.</li>

<p>If every remaining fish looks and behaves normally, that shifts the odds toward something specific to the one that died rather than something environmental.</p>
<h2>Minute twenty to forty: what changed in the last two weeks</h2>
<p>Most sudden single deaths trace to something that happened, and the something is usually recent. Work through this honestly rather than defensively.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>New fish added</strong>, even one, even weeks ago. New arrivals bring things in, which is the whole argument for a quarantine tank.</li>
<li><strong>A filter cleaned</strong>, especially if the media was rinsed under a tap. That is one of the more common ways a tank loses its cycle overnight, and <a href="/aquarium-cycle-crash/">an aquarium cycle crash</a> covers what it looks like afterward.</li>
<li><strong>A large or unusual water change</strong>, or a change done without conditioner.</li>
<li><strong>A power cut</strong>, even a short one. A filter that stops for hours is a filter that may come back with dead bacteria in it.</li>
<li><strong>A temperature swing</strong>, a heatwave, a window left open, a heater that failed.</li>
<li><strong>Anything added to the water</strong>: a treatment, a plant fertilizer, a new decoration that was not rinsed.</li>
<li><strong>Anything used in the room.</strong> Aerosols, paint, cleaning sprays, insecticide, scented products. The water surface takes in what is in the air, and this cause is invisible unless you go looking for it.</li>
<li><strong>New decor or new substrate</strong>, particularly anything painted, metallic or of unknown origin.</li>
<li><strong>Overfeeding</strong>, or food left uneaten and decaying under the substrate.</li>
</ul>

<p>Write down anything on that list that happened. The pattern is often obvious once it is written and invisible while it is in your head.</p>
<h2>Minute forty to sixty: act on what you found, in this order</h2>
<ol>
<li><strong>If ammonia or nitrite is detectable</strong>, do a water change with conditioned, temperature-matched water. <a href="/how-to-do-a-water-change-aquarium/">How to do a water change</a> is the method. Then test again after a few hours.</li>
<li><strong>If the temperature is wrong</strong>, bring it back gradually. Fast temperature corrections are their own stress.</li>
<li><strong>If you suspect something got into the water</strong>, a water change is the response, and repeat it rather than doing one enormous one.</li>
<li><strong>If everything reads clean and the other fish are fine</strong>, do nothing dramatic. Test again tomorrow and the day after. A single death in a tank that is otherwise healthy happens, and reacting to it with a large intervention causes more harm than it prevents.</li>
<li><strong>Do not add any treatment.</strong> You do not have a diagnosis, and medicating a tank you have not diagnosed is how a single death becomes several.</li>

<h2>The part nobody wants to read</h2>
<p>Sometimes the answer is that you will not find out. A fish can arrive from the shop already carrying something. An individual can have an internal problem that was never going to be visible. Fish also have lifespans, and some of the species sold as beginner fish are short-lived.</p>
<p><strong>A single death in a tank with clean water, healthy tankmates and no recent changes usually stays unexplained, and that is a tolerable outcome.</strong> What is not tolerable is a second and a third, because that is a pattern and a pattern has a cause.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Watching a fish struggle to stay upright is one of the more distressing things that happens in this hobby, partly because it looks so wrong and partly because the fish is usually still alert while it happens.</p>
<p>The internet will hand you a single label for it, and that label is the problem. <strong>&quot;Swim bladder disease&quot; is not a diagnosis. It is a description of what you are looking at</strong>, and the things that produce it range from a meal that was too large to an injury to a bacterial infection to poor water. They do not respond to the same thing.</p>
<p>What this page can do is tell you what the pattern points at and what to check, in what order.</p>
<h2>The three patterns, and what each suggests</h2>
<p>Watch for two or three minutes and note which one you have.</p>
<p><strong>Floating, and unable to get down.</strong> The fish is at or near the surface, often tail-up, and swimming downward takes visible effort that it loses the moment it stops. Most commonly associated with gas or with distension inside the body cavity: a large meal, food that swelled after being eaten, constipation, or trapped air.</p>
<p><strong>Sinking, and unable to get up.</strong> The fish rests on the substrate and rises only with continuous effort. Less commonly discussed and generally more serious, because the everyday causes of positive buoyancy do not explain it. Infection, organ problems and injury are more likely here.</p>
<p><strong>Rolling or listing sideways.</strong> The fish cannot hold its axis and tips or rolls, sometimes intermittently. This one is the least specific of the three and is seen with infection, with neurological problems, and in the later stages of several unrelated illnesses.</p>
<p><strong>Any of the three appearing suddenly in several fish at once is not a buoyancy problem at all.</strong> It is a water problem, and it needs the water tested immediately rather than the fish examined.</p>

<h2>Check the water first, every time</h2>
<p>This is not a formality. It is the step that most often changes what you do next.</p>
<p>Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and temperature and write the numbers down. <a href="/aquarium-water-parameters/">Aquarium water parameters</a> explains what each one is telling you and <a href="/how-often-to-test-aquarium-water/">how often to test aquarium water</a> covers the routine that would have caught it earlier.</p>
<p>Two things this site will not do here. It will not give you a figure at which fish begin to lose buoyancy control, because no honest single figure exists: ammonia toxicity depends on pH and temperature, so the same reading is a different exposure in two different tanks. And it will not tell you that a particular reading is fine. What is reliable is simpler: <strong>detectable ammonia or nitrite in a tank with an unwell fish is a finding, and correcting it comes before anything else you might try.</strong> <a href="/aquarium-ammonia-reading-high/">Ammonia reading above zero</a> is where to go if that is what you found.</p>
<p>Temperature deserves its own look. A fish that is much colder than its species is comfortable at digests slowly, and slow digestion is behind a large share of the floating cases. <h2>Then look at the feeding</h2>
<p>If the water is clean and one fish is floating, feeding is the next place to look, and it is the most commonly involved factor in the everyday version of this.</p>
<p>The things that come up repeatedly:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Too much food, too fast.</strong> A fish that gulps a large meal takes in air with it and swallows more than the gut can move.</li>
<li><strong>Dry food that expands.</strong> Flakes and pellets absorb water. Food that swells after it is eaten rather than before is a mechanical problem inside a small animal.</li>
<li><strong>Food taken at the surface</strong> by a fish that gulps air along with it.</li>
<li><strong>A diet that is entirely dry</strong>, with nothing that moves through the gut easily.</li>
<li><strong>Species that are built for this.</strong> Fancy goldfish and some short-bodied, round-bodied varieties have compressed internal anatomy as a consequence of how they were bred, and buoyancy trouble is much more common in them. That is a conformation issue, not something you did.</li>

<h2>Supportive care, which is not treatment</h2>
<p>While you work out the cause, there are things that reduce harm and none of them involve adding anything to the water.</p>

<li><strong>Lower the water level slightly</strong> in a tank where a sinking fish is struggling to reach the surface, or make sure a floating fish is not stranded in air. A fish held out of water dries and damages.</li>

<h2>What this site does not publish, and why</h2>
<p>No medication, no dose, no fasting duration presented as a cure, no salt concentration, no temperature protocol.</p>
<p>The reason is specific to this symptom rather than general. <strong>Buoyancy loss has causes that look identical from outside and need opposite responses.</strong> A fish that floated after a large meal and a fish that is listing because of an internal infection present in a very similar way to an owner watching through glass. A protocol aimed at the first does nothing for the second while days pass. <p>That answer is wrong often enough to matter, because at least three different things produce a damaged fin and only one of them is an infection. Treating the tank for a disease it does not have means medicating healthy fish, and often means harming the filter bacteria as well, while the actual cause carries on doing what it was doing.</p>
<p><strong>So the useful question is not &quot;what medicine&quot;, it is &quot;what is the shape of the damage, and what else is in the tank&quot;.</strong></p>
<h2>Look at the edge, not the amount</h2>
<p>How much fin is missing tells you very little. What the missing edge looks like tells you a great deal.</p>

<p>Two more observations sharpen it further.</p>
<p><strong>Is it one fish or several?</strong> Damage confined to one long-finned individual in a mixed tank points hard at nipping or at decor. Damage appearing across several fish at once points at the water.</p>
<p><strong>Is it getting worse day to day?</strong> Take a photograph today and another in two days from the same angle. A tear that is unchanged, or that is visibly rebuilding a slightly ragged new edge, is healing. A margin that is creeping steadily toward the body is not.</p>
<h2>Cause one: something in the tank is sharp</h2>
<p>This is the most under-diagnosed of the three and the easiest to fix.</p>
<p>Run a check on everything hard in the tank. Plastic plants with molded seams. Rough or holed decorative ornaments. Broken slate. Anything the fish squeezes through or hides inside. Filter intakes that a long fin can be pulled against.</p>
<p>The classic test is a length of pantyhose or a fine cloth drawn over the surface. If it snags, a fin snags.</p>
<p>Long-finned fish and fish that startle easily are at much higher risk, because the damage happens in a fraction of a second when something spooks them at night.</p>

<h2>Cause two: a tankmate is biting</h2>
<p>Nipping is behavior, so you diagnose it by watching rather than by inspecting.</p>
<p>Watch the tank for ten quiet minutes with the room lights low and yourself out of view, twice, at different times of day. Feeding time and the hour before lights-out are when it usually happens.</p>
<p>Signs that point this way:</p>
<ul>
<li>One fish is targeted repeatedly and the others are untouched.</li>
<li>The damage is on the trailing edges, in bites rather than in a receding margin.</li>
<li>The victim has the longest or most colorful fins in the tank.</li>
<li>You can see the chasing. Nipping is not usually subtle once you are looking for it.</li>

<p>Fixing it is a stocking question, not a medicine question. A group that is too small, a tank that is too crowded, a species combination that was never going to work, or too little cover for the fish being harassed. The tankmate compatibility question is a subject in its own right and it deserves more room than this page has.</p>
<h2>Cause three: water quality, which is what fin rot really is</h2>
<p>The infection people call fin rot is usually opportunistic. The bacteria involved are ordinary residents of an ordinary tank, and a healthy fish&#39;s immune system handles them. What lets them get a foothold is a fish that is already under pressure, and the most common source of that pressure by a wide margin is the water.</p>
<p>So before anything else, test it. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temperature, and note what the readings actually are rather than whether they feel acceptable. <p>This site does not publish a threshold at which fin damage begins, and that is deliberate. The toxicity of a given ammonia reading depends on pH and temperature, so the same number on two tanks is not the same dose to two fish. <p>Other pressures that stack on top of water quality: a temperature that swings, a tank that never gets a water change, overfeeding and the decay that follows, and a recent move or a recent addition of new fish.</p>
<h2>What to do first, in order</h2>
<ol>
<li><strong>Test the water.</strong> Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, temperature. Write down what you get.</li>

<li><strong>Find and remove anything sharp.</strong> The cloth test.</li>
<li><strong>Watch the tank twice for ten minutes</strong> with yourself out of sight, and note who chases whom.</li>
<li><strong>Photograph the fin</strong> from the same angle each day so you have evidence rather than an impression.</li>
<li><strong>Keep the routine steady.</strong> Clean, stable water is the condition a fin heals in. Fins regrow, though the color and the shape of the regrown tissue may not match what was there.</li>

<p>If the water is clean, nothing is sharp, nobody is biting, and the margin is still receding, that is the point at which this stops being something to solve from a web page.</p>
<h2>The treatment this site does not publish, and why</h2>
<p>You will not find a medication name, a dose, a salt concentration or a treatment schedule here, and not because the information is hard to find. It is because publishing it would be irresponsible in a way that is easy to miss.</p>
<p>Aquarium medications are dosed by water volume, and a dose is only as accurate as the volume estimate behind it, which for most tanks is the number printed on the box rather than the actual water in the glass. The same compound that is routine for one species is dangerous to another. Several common treatments are lethal to shrimp and snails, and several harm the filter bacteria the whole tank depends on, which converts a fin problem into an ammonia problem within a week.</p>
<p>Most importantly, the fin is a symptom. If the cause is a sharp ornament or a nipping tankmate, the medication treats nothing at all while the damage continues.</p>

<p><strong>How can I tell fin rot from fin nipping?</strong>
Look at the edge, not the amount. Fraying that starts at the outer edge and works inward, often with a pale, cloudy or discolored margin, points at an infection process. Small crescent bites out of the trailing edge, usually on one fish more than others, point at a tankmate. A clean, straight tear with otherwise healthy edges points at physical damage from something sharp.</p>
<p><strong>Do damaged fins grow back?</strong>
Yes. Clean, stable water is the condition a fin heals in, though the color and the shape of the regrown tissue may not match what was there before.</p>
<p><strong>Should I medicate for fin rot straight away?</strong>

A US gallon of fresh water weighs about <strong>8.33 pounds</strong> (a liter weighs about 1 kilogram), so a filled aquarium weighs roughly its empty weight plus 8.33 pounds for every gallon it holds, plus everything you put inside it. A 55 gallon tank carries about 458 pounds of water on its own. Add a common glass tank body at 78 pounds and 50 pounds of gravel and you are near 590 pounds, about a quarter of a metric ton, standing on a footprint the size of a coffee table.</p>
<p>The number is not the hard part. Working out whether the floor under it can take that load is a structural question, and this article does not answer it. It gives you the weight, honestly sourced, so that the person who can answer it has something real to work with.</p>
<h2>How Much Does a Fish Tank Weigh? The Formula</h2>

<h3>What water weighs, and why 8.33</h3>
<p>Two published figures do all the work.</p>
<p>The U.S. Geological Survey&#39;s Water Science School publishes a density table for pure water: at 70 °F (21 °C) the density is <strong>0.99802 g/cm³, which is 62.30 pounds per cubic foot</strong> (read September 2, 2026). NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C, gives the volume definition: <strong>one US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches</strong>, about 3.785 liters (read September 2, 2026).</p>
<p>The rest is arithmetic you can repeat:</p>
<ul>
<li>One cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches. 1,728 ÷ 231 = <strong>7.48 US gallons per cubic foot</strong>.</li>
<li>62.30 lb per cubic foot ÷ 7.48 gallons = <strong>8.33 pounds per US gallon</strong> at 70 °F.</li>
<li>In metric, 0.99802 g/cm³ means a liter of water weighs 998 grams, so <strong>1 kilogram per liter</strong> is accurate to within about two grams.</li>
<li>Converting the gallon figure: 8.33 lb x 0.4536 = <strong>3.78 kg per US gallon</strong>.</li>
</ul>
<p>Temperature moves this a little and never enough to matter. Warmer water is slightly less dense, so a tropical tank held in the low 80s F is a fraction lighter per gallon than the same tank at room temperature. If you keep an eye on <a href="/aquarium-water-temperature/">aquarium water temperature</a> you already know the range you run, and across that range the difference is a rounding error next to the weight of the substrate. Salt water is heavier than fresh; every figure on this page is fresh water.</p>
<p><strong>Use 8.33 lb per gallon, or 1 kg per liter. Round up, never down.</strong></p>
<h3>The empty tank: use your model&#39;s number</h3>
<p>This is where generic charts start lying to you, because glass thickness, frame design and bracing differ by maker and by model.</p>
<p>Aqueon publishes a size chart for its standard glass aquariums. It lists the 55 gallon at <strong>78 pounds empty</strong>, the 20 gallon long at <strong>25 pounds</strong>, the 10 gallon leader at <strong>11 pounds</strong>, the 29 gallon at <strong>40 pounds</strong>, the 40 gallon breeder at <strong>58 pounds</strong>, the 75 gallon at <strong>98 pounds</strong> and the 125 gallon at <strong>177 pounds</strong> (read September 2, 2026). Those are that maker&#39;s numbers for that maker&#39;s tanks.</p>
<p>Listings for a Marineland 55 gallon quote around <strong>62 pounds empty</strong> (read September 2, 2026). Same nominal size, same hobby, 16 pounds apart. Neither is wrong. They are different tanks.</p>
<p>So the honest instruction is: find the empty weight for the tank you actually own, on the box, in the manual, or on the manufacturer&#39;s spec page. If you cannot find it, use the heaviest published figure you can find for that nominal size and treat it as a floor, not a ceiling.</p>
<h3>Substrate, rock and wood: weigh them, do not guess</h3>
<p>Substrate weight per gallon is not a constant. Fine sand, coarse gravel, aqua soil and crushed coral all have different bulk densities, and two bags of &quot;aquarium gravel&quot; from different suppliers are not interchangeable by volume.</p>
<p>You do not need a table for this, because the number is already printed on the bag. Substrate is sold by weight. Add up what you bought. If you put two 20 pound bags of gravel in a 20 gallon tank, that is 40 pounds, and you know it exactly.</p>
<p>Rock and driftwood work the same way. Put them on a bathroom scale before they go in the tank and write the number down. Stone density varies enormously between lava rock, slate and limestone, so any single figure printed as though it applied to all of them would be invented.</p>
<p>One physical detail people ask about: does submerged rock still count, since it displaces water? The strict answer is that a submerged object adds its own weight to the system and displaces an equal volume of water, so the tank holds less water than its rating suggests. The practical answer for a load estimate is to ignore the displacement, count the full dry weight of the rock, and treat the tank as full of water anyway. That deliberately over-counts by a few pounds. On a safety-critical number, over-counting is the direction you want to be wrong in.</p>

<p>Take Aqueon&#39;s own chart. It lists the 55 gallon at 78 lb empty and <strong>625 lb full</strong>. But 78 plus the nominal 458 pounds of water is 536 pounds. The chart&#39;s &quot;full&quot; figure is 89 pounds higher than tank plus rated water. The 20 long shows the same pattern: 25 lb empty plus 167 lb of water is 192, and the chart says 225. The 10 gallon: 11 plus 83 is 94, and the chart says 111.</p>
<p>The maker&#39;s &quot;full&quot; column carries an allowance the chart does not itemize, presumably for substrate and decor. That is a sensible thing for a maker to do and a poor thing for you to rely on, because the allowance is not your substrate. If you use a chart&#39;s full-weight column as your number, you are trusting somebody else&#39;s guess about what is in your tank.</p>
<p>Four more things the charts routinely omit:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>The stand.</strong> It is under the load and it is part of it. Stand weights vary by model and material, from light steel frames to solid wood cabinets, so read the maker&#39;s spec for the stand you own rather than accept a number from anywhere else.</li>
<li><strong>A canister filter full of water.</strong> It sits beside or under the tank, and it is heavy when primed.</li>
<li><strong>Hood, glass lid and light fixture.</strong> Individually minor, collectively real on a large tank.</li>
<li><strong>The nominal rating is not the water you will run.</strong> A 55 gallon measures about 48.25 x 12.75 x 21 inches on the outside, which is 12,919 cubic inches, or 55.9 gallons brim full before you subtract the glass thickness and the inch or two of air below the rim. Your actual water volume is under the label. Estimating with the label included is another deliberate over-count.</li>

<p>Whether a floor carries a given aquarium depends on the structure itself: how the joists run, how far they span, their size, spacing, species and grade, what is underneath them, whether the tank sits along a bearing wall or in the middle of a room, the age and condition of the building, and any alteration a previous owner made that you cannot see. Two apartments with identical layouts can differ because of what happens below.</p>
<p>Residential floor loading figures do exist in building codes, and you will see them quoted in hobby forums as a pounds per square foot test any homeowner can apply. <strong>Do not use them that way, and this site will not print one for you to apply.</strong> Those values are design assumptions about evenly distributed loads, and turning them into a verdict about your floor with a concentrated load standing on it is professional judgment, not arithmetic.</p>
<p>The people who answer this are a <strong>structural engineer</strong> or a qualified building professional, and the visit is short and specific. If you rent, your <strong>landlord or building manager</strong> needs to be told before the tank arrives, not after. In some places an alteration or a very large tank brings a permit or an inspection with it.</p>
<p>We will not tell you your floor is fine. Nobody who has not looked at your building can.</p>

<p><strong>Never move a tank with water in it.</strong> Not an inch, not to slide it straight. A partly filled tank flexes in ways an empty one does not, and the load rides on whatever corner you tip it toward. Drain it completely, remove the substrate, then move it.</p>
<p><strong>Place the empty tank exactly where it will live, then fill it.</strong> This is why the placement step comes before the filling step in the <a href="/first-aquarium-setup-checklist/">first aquarium setup checklist</a>, and why the decision is effectively permanent once water goes in.</p>
<p><strong>Support the whole base.</strong> A rimmed glass tank needs continuous, level support around its full perimeter, and a rimless tank needs a level, even surface across the entire base. An unsupported corner or a slight rock is a stress point in glass, and glass fails at stress points.</p>
<p><strong>Respect the buckets.</strong> Water changes are the weight arriving in installments. A 5 gallon bucket holds about 42 pounds of water (5 x 8.33), which is why the <a href="/how-to-do-a-water-change-aquarium/">water change routine</a> is built around a siphon and a hose rather than carrying full buckets across a room. Wet floors and heavy buckets are the everyday injury in this hobby, not the dramatic collapse.</p>
<p><strong>Understand that the tank stays loaded.</strong> Once you fill it and start <a href="/how-to-cycle-a-new-aquarium/">cycling the tank</a>, that load is continuous for weeks before a fish ever arrives, and then for years. A stand that merely survives the first day is not a stand that passed.</p>
<p><strong>Treat any wet patch under the tank as urgent.</strong> A seam that weeps is carrying the same load as a seam that holds.
